Cisco Systems

Recertification is an important indicator to IT professionals and their employers, ensuring that the certification holder has kept up with current trends in networking technology. Valid certifications may be renewed indefinitely, but without timely renewal, certifications expire or become inactive. To keep certifications current, individuals should recertify by advancing to the next level of certification or passing the designated recertification exam(s).

Recertification Renewal Timeframes

Entry-level, Associate-level, and Professional-level certifications are valid for three years and must be recertified before the certfication expiration date.
All CCIE certifications are valid for two years and must be recertified by the deadline to remain on active status.
Specialist certifications are valid for two years and can be renewed by retaking all exams required for the certification. Cisco Sales Expert (CSE) designations are valid for two years and must be recertified regardless of other certifications you have achieved, are currently pursuing or are in the process of recertifying.

How to Recertify

Renewal requires certification holders to register for and pass the appropriate Cisco recertification exam(s). In order to recertify, exam requirements must be met prior to the certification expiration date. Individuals with an expired certification(s) must repeat the entire certification exam process in order to regain their certification(s). Cisco Certified Architect	5 years	Cisco Certified Architect will remain certified as long as they continue to contribute to maintaining the Architect Certification program by evaluating candidate applications or serving on the Board Review team. A valid CCAr will automatically recertify all other Cisco Certifications.

Design Certification Paths Note: When using a higher level of certification to extend other certifications, the expiration date of other certifications will extend to the expiration date of the higher certification (i.e.: If you have one year left on your CCNA certification and you earn a CCIE certification (which has a two-year certification life) then both your CCIE certification and your CCNA certification will expire two years from the date you achieved the CCIE certification).

CCIE R&S	2 years	To recertify, pass ONE of the following before the certification expiration date: Pass any current CCIE Written Exam OR CCIE Lab Exam or Pass the current CCDE Written Exam OR current CCDE Practical Exam, or Pass the Cisco Certified Architect (CCAr) interview AND the CCAr board review to extend lower certifications. CCIE and CCDE professionals that do not pass a qualifying exam or lab exam before the recertification deadline will be placed in a suspended status and their employers will be notified. Suspended CCIE and CCDE professionals have one year to pass the required exam or lab before their expert level certification becomes permanently inactive. Inactive CCIE and CCDE professionals lose all benefits and must pass both the CCIE written and lab or CCDE written or practical exams again. Achieving or recertifying CCIE, CCDE or CCAr automatically extends your active Entry, Associate, Professional or other Expert level certification(s), or Specialist Certifications up to the expiration date of the latest CCIE, CCDE or CCAr certification achieved.
