Cisco Virtualized Multi-Tenant Data Center Framework

This document describes the Cisco VMDC cloud infrastructure architecture.

View Document

Cisco® Virtualized Multi-Tenant Data Center (VMDC) is a reference architecture for both Cloud and traditional data center environments. The VMDC architecture uses modular, flexible validated designs in an integrated approach that adapts easily to address Enterprise, Service Provider, or Public Sector needs.

Cisco VMDC enables confident adoption of innovations that support Unified Fabric, Unified Computing and Unified Network Services to achieve a Unified Data Center where IT is delivered as a Service. The VMDC 2.2 design adds the following:

  • Unified network services delivered via physical and virtual appliances such as the ASA 5585-X and VSG
  • Enhanced security models with public and private zones for secure access control
  • Prescriptive and flexible service models to address Enterprise and Service Provider requirements
  • QoS mapping to support multiple applications in the data center
  • Data center interconnect validated using VPLS and EoMPLS on the ASR9K.
  • New system scale levels

Get previous Cisco Virtualized Multi-Tenant Data Center (VMDC) Solution design guides, including VMDC 2.1, 2.0, and 1.0 releases. These Cisco Validated Designs (CVD) provide guidance to design and deploy a scalable, flexible, and virtualized multi-tenant data center infrastructure.

Cisco VMDC 1.1 introduced the foundational architecture for deploying virtualized and multi-tenant data centers for cloud-based services. It supports high availability, elasticity, and resiliency of virtualized compute, network, and storage services.

Cisco VMDC 2.0 enhances and expands the VMDC 1.1 solution. Primary additions are:

  • A service-portal orchestration component
  • Enhanced network segmentation and host security
  • Use of integrated compute stacks (ICS) as building blocks for the point of delivery (PoD)
  • Validation of two scale points: compact PoD and Large PoD
