Metro Edge Solution

Metro Edge Solutions for Service Providers

Learn how Cisco Metro Edge solutions are helping service providers profitably deliver high-performance LAN and metro services to business customers. (4:22 min)

Metro Edge Networking Solutions

In the metro edge network that connects customer local-area networks (LANs), you need intelligent edge solutions to deliver the service variety and performance that your customers demand. Indeed, the modern LAN is "local" in name only. Today's LAN is a complex, high-speed network that may connect many buildings and services across a campus or across town. And yet, customers expect LAN-like performance and availability from their service provider, at an affordable price.

Cisco Metro Edge solutions deliver the performance to improve service quality and availability, and the scalability to meet a variety of customer bandwidth requirements. They help you deliver a broad range of services to meet evolving customer demand, while providing a rapid payback on your metro edge infrastructure investment to support profitable growth.

Cisco's powerful suite of optical metro edge Ethernet solutions is highlighted by the Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Provisioning Platform (MSPP), the most widely deployed MSPP in the world. The solution supports all major service types, including TDM (PDH/SONET/SDH), data, storage and video services. It enables a converged network build-out by providing a DWDM platform that supports carrier-class TDM and Packet Switching and Photonic Switching technologies. As a result, you can reduce the costs of deploying multiple platforms and interconnection hardware for different service types in metro edge networks. Using Cisco MSPPs throughout the metro edge network, you can upgrade any service with a single card addition, saving inventory, maintenance, and training costs.

Cisco IP Next-Generation Network (NGN) Architecture

The Cisco IP NGN Carrier Ethernet Design supports a smooth integration of business, residential, wholesale, and managed services over a converged IP/MPLS infrastructure. It helps you gain a competitive advantage by offering consistent and highly reliable transport of "any-play" services as part of an end-to-end medianet: an intelligent network that is optimized for media delivery.

Components of the optical solution include:

  • Metro Core interconnects edge rings and deliver traffic to service PoPs with the emphasis on capacity, efficient service aggregation, and reliability.
  • Metro Edge gives service providers the ability to offer both traditional revenue services such as ATM, Frame Relay, Voice, leased line, wireless and DSL as well as new services such as content networking, Wide-area Ethernet and wireless data
  • Long-Haul addresses increased channel counts, span reach, and the associated flexible optical add-drop multiplexor (OADM) capabilities.
  • Service POP grooms traffic from the metro network, perform edge packet switching when IP services are enabled, and perform backbone switching
